London Theatres A–Z
Find every West End theatre in London, from the Adelphi to the Victoria Palace. Browse our A–Z of London theatres to see what's on at each venue, check seating and travel information, and book official theatre tickets.
There are 39 theatres in London’s West End. The Society of London Theatre (SOLT) counts 47 full member venues — a wider figure that also includes subsidised houses outside Theatreland such as the National Theatre, the Barbican, Sadler’s Wells and Shakespeare’s Globe. This A–Z lists all 62 London venues currently staging shows: West End playhouses plus the major receiving houses, arenas and pop-ups beyond it.
Capacity, operator and access details were checked against each venue’s own published information in August 2026. Where an operator publishes nothing, we say so rather than guess.

Which London theatres have air conditioning?
Only a handful of London theatres publicly confirm air conditioning. As of August 2026, the venues that state it outright are the London Coliseum, Sadler’s Wells, the Shaftesbury Theatre, Charing Cross Theatre and the National Theatre’s Olivier auditorium. Most West End theatres are listed Victorian and Edwardian buildings that were never fitted with it.
Nimax’s six houses — Apollo, Duchess, Garrick, Lyric, Palace and Vaudeville — are careful to say they have air cooling rather than air conditioning, and note they cannot guarantee a temperature. The Theatre Royal Haymarket uses the same “air-cooled” wording. The Dominion states plainly that its auditorium is not air conditioned, because of its age and listed status.
ATG, Delfont Mackintosh, LW Theatres and Trafalgar Entertainment publish no air-conditioning information for their London venues, so those show as not stated below rather than a claim we cannot source. On a hot day: book a matinee, choose the Stalls over the upper levels, and take water in with you.
Every London theatre: capacity, owner, tube and access
Largest first. Capacity is the operator’s own published figure where one exists. “Step-free” means step-free access to at least some seating — always confirm your specific seats with the venue before booking.

London theatres: frequently asked questions
How many West End theatres are there?
There are 39 theatres in London’s West End. The Society of London Theatre has 47 full member venues, a broader count that also takes in subsidised houses outside Theatreland such as the National Theatre, the Barbican, Sadler’s Wells and Shakespeare’s Globe.
Which is the biggest theatre in London?
The London Coliseum on St Martin’s Lane, home of English National Opera, is the largest at 2,359 seats. The Apollo Victoria (2,328) and the London Palladium (2,286) come next.
Which is the smallest West End theatre?
The Arts Theatre off Leicester Square is the smallest commercial West End house at around 350 seats. Among Society of London Theatre member venues the Fortune Theatre is the smallest, at 432.
What is the oldest theatre in London?
Theatre Royal Drury Lane. A playhouse has stood on the site since 1663, making it the oldest theatre site in continuous use in the world, though the present building — the fourth — dates from 1812. The Old Vic (1818) and the Theatre Royal Haymarket (1821) follow.
Which London theatres have air conditioning?
Very few state that they do. As of August 2026 the London Coliseum, Sadler’s Wells, the Shaftesbury Theatre, Charing Cross Theatre and the National Theatre’s Olivier auditorium confirm air conditioning. The six Nimax theatres and the Theatre Royal Haymarket describe air cooling rather than air conditioning, and the Dominion states its auditorium is not air conditioned. Most other operators publish nothing on the subject.
Who owns the West End theatres?
Six groups own most of them: ATG (Ambassador Theatre Group), Nimax Theatres, LW Theatres, Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, the Nederlander Organization and Trafalgar Entertainment. A handful stay independent or charitable, including the Criterion, St Martin’s, the Shaftesbury and the Arts Theatre.
How do I find out which theatre my show is at?
Use the “Which theatre is my show at?” table on this page. It lists every show currently booking in London against its theatre and nearest Underground station, and updates automatically as runs open and close.
Are London theatres wheelchair accessible?
Most offer step-free access to at least part of the auditorium, but historic buildings vary enormously and some, such as The Old Vic, have no step-free route to the foyer at all. Wheelchair spaces are usually limited to a handful per performance. Check the venue’s own access page, linked in the table above, and book access seats directly with the theatre.
What is the nearest tube station for West End theatres?
Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden and Charing Cross serve most of Theatreland, with Tottenham Court Road covering the Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road end. Covent Garden is the busiest and is often exit-only after shows, so Leicester Square is usually the faster walk.
