The Phantom of the Opera has now been showing for over 35 years. The timeless romantic tragedy has been entertaining audiences across the world since it first opened in 1986 in His Majesty’s Theatre in London.

The Phantom of the Opera first opened at His Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 starring Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Adapting Gaston Leroux’s gothic French fairytale, Andrew Lloyd Webber retold the story of ingénue Christine Daae and the mysterious Phantom, who has secretly been teaching her to sing in the caverns beneath Paris’ magnificent Opera House.

Featuring some of the most spectacular special effects in musical theatre, the Olivier and Tony Award-winning musical is also known for breath-taking love songs such as ‘The Music Of The Night’, ‘Wishing You Were Somewhere Here Again’, ‘All I Ask Of You’ and the titular anthem, ‘The Phantom Of The Opera’.

In 2006, the show became the longest-running in Broadway history, surpassing the previous record holder, Cats. In 2016, the West End production celebrated 30 years with a special appearance of the original cast during the curtain call. Now in its 35th year at His Majesty’s Theatre in London, The Phantom of the Opera is recognised as one of the most iconic shows on the West End.
