The show Opening Night, at London’s Gielgud Theatre, is based on John Cassavetes’ legendary film, will be directed and produced by Ivo van Hove and feature Smith as Myrtle. The production will run for a strictly limited time from March 6 to July 27, 2024, with additional casting to be announced soon.
Opening Night follows a theatre company’s preparations to stage a major new play on Broadway. However, drama ensues behind the scenes when their leading lady is rocked by tragedy, and her turmoil forces everybody to deliver the performance of their lives.
In an announcement, Sheridan Smith expressed her excitement at the opportunity to work with musical genius Rufus Wainwright and stage director Ivo van Hove. She considers this to be a once-in-a-lifetime chance and is thrilled to be cast as Myrtle, a complex and challenging character.
Ivo van Hove also expressed his excitement at the prospect of collaborating with Wessex Grove to create a new musical. He is thrilled to work with Rufus Wainwright, whom he has been a fan of for many years and connected with over their shared love of John Cassavetes’ film, “Opening Night.” Bringing a musical version of this film to the stage has been a long-held ambition of theirs. He explained that “Opening Night” provides a glimpse into the trials and tribulations behind the scenes of the theatre, as well as the heartbreaking story of a woman fighting for hope and self-determination in a world that doesn’t want to listen.
Rufus Wainwright added that he has been waiting for ages to write his first musical and is delighted to have the opportunity to work with such a fantastic story, the incomparable Sheridan Smith, and the incredible Ivo van Hove. He describes “Opening Night” as a shining beacon that represents excellence in cinema and the might of live theatre. He believes that the intense marriage of film and stage in this production tells a very personal story of mental and creative survival that everyone can relate to on a deep, human level.
