The musical premiered on July 10, 2018, at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston and has been performed in various countries since then. Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor played lovers Satine and Christian in Baz Luhrmann’s original 2001 film. It’s the third film in the filmmaker’s ‘Red Curtain’ trilogy, including Strictly Ballroom and Romeo & Juliet. The Moulin Rouge! film picked up nine Academy Award nominations, and was the first musical in 10 years to receive a nomination for Best Picture.
The Moulin Rouge! film was always destined for the stage. The pre-Broadway world premiere engagement wowed audiences in Boston, and then packed up its bags and headed to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway.
