The stalls are the ground-floor seats closest to the stage. The dress circle (or royal circle) is the first balcony level, often offering an excellent full view of the stage. The upper circle (or grand circle/balcony) is higher up and usually the most affordable. The best seats depend on the show and theatre.

Evening performances typically begin at 7.30pm, though some start at 7pm or 8pm. Matinee performances usually start at 2.30pm or 3pm. Always check the specific performance time on your ticket and aim to arrive at least 30 minutes early.

Most West End shows have matinees on Wednesdays or Thursdays and on Saturdays, and many have Sunday matinees too. Matinee days vary by show, so check the performance schedule when booking.

An increasing number of West End shows now perform on Sundays, though many theatres still close on Sundays or Mondays. There is theatre on in London seven days a week, but each production keeps its own schedule.

There is no formal dress code at West End theatres. Most people wear smart-casual, but you are welcome to dress up or keep it relaxed. The main thing is to be comfortable, as you will be seated for a couple of hours.

Arrive at least 30 minutes before the performance starts. This gives you time to collect or scan tickets, pass through security, visit the bar or facilities and find your seat. Latecomers may not be admitted until a suitable break in the performance.
