Based on Audrey Niffenegger’s bestselling 2003 novel of the same name, this captivating musical weaves an enchanting narrative of love. The Time Traveller’s Wife Musical tells the extraordinary story of Henry, a man with a genetic disorder that propels him into spontaneous time travel, and his mesmerising journey to be with his soulmate, Clare, through the ages.

Despite the everlasting love between the couple, time incessantly tears them apart. This unique storyline illustrates the immense challenges in relationships and powerfully showcases how true love can stand the test of time. Their relationship is like no other. And yet, it’s like all others. Clare is a talented sculptor and Henry is – well – a time traveller. They meet, fall in love, and marry – but not in that order. Flung apart by time but united by love, Henry is always trying to get back to Clare. Their journey is one of resilience, impossibilities, and trying to hold on to each other when everything is pulling them apart.

The creative team behind Ghost: The Musical and Back to the Future: The Musical reunite to bring this compelling story to the Apollo Theatre following its world premiere at the Chester Playhouse. David Hunter and Joanna Woodward play Henry and Clare, reprising their roles from Chester.

The Time Traveller’s Wife Musical London

Audrey Niffenegger wrote the original The Time Traveller’s Wife novel. It was her debut book, and 25 literary publishers rejected it before one finally picked it up. The mesmerising stage production of The Time Traveller’s Wife musical in the West End features an original score by global superstar Joss Stone and multi-Grammy Award winner Dave Stewart. The pair are renowned for collaborating with Mick Jagger, A.R. Rahman, and Damian Marley in the acclaimed supergroup SuperHeavy, and Stewart is one-half of Eurythmics alongside Annie Lennox.

Now, they beautifully bring to life the unconventional tale at the heart of this production alongside Lauren Gunderson, the most-produced playwright in the U.S. in two separate years, who now adapts The Time Traveller’s Wife for the West End. Audrey Niffenegger’s best-selling novel “The Time Traveler’s Wife” has been adapted into a movie featuring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana and a TV series starring Theo James and Rose Leslie. And now, it has also become a West End musical that revolves around the timeless tale of love, loss, and destiny.

David Hunter and Joanna Woodward play the central couple – a man who travels through time and his wife who waits for him in another – in the brand-new stage adaptation. The show had a successful premiere run in Chester last year and is now all set to premiere in the West End at the Apollo Theatre on 7th October.

Adapting “The Time Traveller’s Wife” to the stage was a monumental challenge, but accomplished playwright Lauren Gunderson embraced the project. Gunderson, one of the most-produced playwrights, has written over twenty plays, including “I and You” and “The Book of Will.” She wrote the musical’s book alongside Grammy Award-winning duo Joss Stone and Dave Stewart, who wrote the music and lyrics.

“It was such an important book for me personally,” says Gunderson about adapting Niffenegger’s novel. “It’s a real joy to reframe the story for the stage. I am always drawn to a big, complex, emotional, brainy, surprising, edgy romance. And “The Time Traveller’s Wife” has all of those elements in abundance.”
